BREASTFEEDING COUNSELING INFORMATION
What are the benefits of breastfeeding?
- Breast milk provides all the essential nutrients a baby needs for the first six months of their life to grow and develop, and continues to provide high-quality nutrients and protection against infection up to two years of age or more.
- Additionally, breastfeeding can contribute to birth spacing, helps the mother’s uterus to contract reducing the risk of bleeding after birth, lowers the rate of breast and ovarian cancer in the mother, promotes a faster return to mother’s pre-pregnancy weight, and promotes the emotional bond between mother and infant.
BREASTFEEDING COUNSELING Q&A
Answer: Breastfeeding should be on-demand, meaning that your baby will tell you when he or she is hungry and needs to feed. Generally, newborns should feed eight to twelve times a day and older babies may feed six to eight times per day.
Answer: If you are having trouble breastfeeding, it is important to seek help from a healthcare provider or other breastfeeding support resources to help you troubleshoot any difficulties you may be experiencing and provide guidance on breastfeeding techniques.
