WHAT IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION?
At Desert Valley Pediatrics, we are dedicated to helping families cope with the challenges of parenting. We understand how difficult it can be for new parents to manage their emotions and provide comprehensive mental health screenings, including the EPDS, to help identify and diagnose possible postpartum depression. Our team of knowledgeable and experienced healthcare professionals are here to provide education and support to new parents during this difficult time.
EPDS INFORMATION
Your doctor may suggest that you take an EPDS screening, especially if you have any of the following risk factors for postpartum depression or if you have been experiencing symptoms of depression for more than two weeks since giving birth.
Potential risk factors for postpartum depression include:
- Past History of Depression
- Being a Younger Mother
- Having a Multiple Birth (Such as Twins or Triplets)
- Having a Child with Health Issues
- Having Little to No Family or Social Support
EPDS Q&A
Answer: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a 10-item self-report questionnaire designed to measure the severity of postnatal depression in women. It is a tool used by healthcare professionals to help identify women who may be suffering from postpartum depression.
Answer: The scoring criteria for the EPDS is based on a range of 0-3 for each of the 10 questions. Scoring 0-13 is considered mild depression, 14-19 is considered moderate, and 20 and above is considered severe depression.
